Gender Predictor Quiz | Old Wives Pregnancy Tales

When we were expecting we chose not to find out the sex of our baby. The surprise was so perfect and we were so glad we chose to wait. That being said, when you don’t know the sex of the baby, neither does anyone else. This opens the door for many, MANY guesses from family, friends, complete strangers, all who are dead certain they are the best gender predictor.

Each person has their own theory for guessing the sex of a baby, regardless of how factual their position may be. I always had to chuckle when someone would say, “You’re carrying all in front, that HAS to be a boy”. Then the next day someone else would say, “You’re carrying all in front, that MUST be a girl.”

These assumptions seem to come from personal experiences but also old wives pregnancy tales. While they may not be truly factual, it's still fun to consult to guess the sex of your baby. That’s why I included a gender predictor quiz in our pregnancy journal. Each has a gender predictor quiz that expecting moms can use to guess the sex of their baby based on old wives’ tales.

Gender Predictor Quiz

Let’s dive into the story of each of these old wives pregnancy tales. Rumour has it that …

Carrying

If you are carrying high that means you are having a girl, while if you are carrying low that means you are having a boy.

Glowing Skin

If you find your complexion bright, that means you are having a boy. While it means you are having a girl if you are having breakouts and find there to be no pregnancy glow in sight (apparently girls “steal Mom’s good looks).

Heart Rate

If a baby's heart rate is over 140 beats per minute (BPM) that means you are having a girl. While if it is under 140 BPM that means you are having a boy.

Morning Sickness

While this one doesn’t seem to be a matter of yes or no, excessive morning sickness or nausea allegedly means you are having a girl.

Cravings

If you are craving sweet things like chocolate, that means you are having a girl. While if you are craving salty foods like chips, that means you are having a boy.

Headaches

If you keep getting headaches that means you are having a boy. No headaches means you are having a girl.

Clumsiness

If you are stumbling around that means you are having a boy. Yet if you notice no change on your feet, that means you are having a girl.

Mood

If you are feeling more ‘moody’ you are apparently having a girl, compared to a boy if you are feeling more ‘chill’.

Partner Weight-Gain

If your partner is gaining “sympathy weight”, that means you are having a girl. No weight change means you are having a boy.

Bump Shape

If your bump is out in front of you, that means you are having a girl while if your bump is wider that means you are having a boy.

Heartburn

If you experience heartburn that means you are having a girl, while if you don’t that means you are having a boy. That being said, there is another  wives tale related to heartburn that says if you have heartburn that means your baby will come out with a lot of hair… Who knew?

Body Temperature

If you find yourself constantly hot that means you’re having a girl, while if you’re cold that means you’re having a girl. With this one I would like to think it depends on the time of year you are in the third trimester - there’s no way you are going to be cold carrying a baby in July.

While these may not have much scientific proof behind them, these old wives pregnancy tales still serve as a fun gender predictor. Even if you know the sex of your baby, it could be fun to compare and see what holds true to your pregnancy experience and the sex of your baby.
